International Human Rights Alert: Ecuadorian Private School Discriminates Against Transgender Family
Guayaquil, Ecuador — March 25, 2026
A documented case of institutional discrimination has emerged from Guayaquil, Ecuador’s largest coastal city, where Unidad Educativa Bilingüe Master School denied enrollment to a 6-year-old child after learning that both legal representatives are transgender individuals.
On March 16, 2026, Diane Rodríguez Zambrano (MSc. Legal Psychology, Director of Asociación Silueta X) and her partner Zack Elías, Attorney, both prominent transgender human rights activists, visited Master School to enroll their daughter Valhy Rodríguez Elías in First Grade.
During the initial visit, the admissions advisor confirmed availability, provided admission syllabi, scheduled an evaluation for March 18, and explicitly stated: ‘We wouldn’t have any problem’ with the family’s situation.
On March 18, the family received formal notification that ‘no spots were available.’ However, Asociación Silueta X activated their mystery shopper protocol: an unidentified person contacted the same institution and was told spots WERE available.
