Christmas is here, and with it, the unmistakable glow of our #MariChristmas by #SiluetaX! More than just a celebration, this is a flame of hope, brotherhood, and resistance that illuminates the hearts of our Trans and LGBT+ community, as well as all our friends, families, and allies who walk this path with us.
We want this tree, which we raise with so much love, to shine as intensely as the pride and resilience of those who form this chosen family. Therefore, we invite you to be part of this unique and profoundly meaningful initiative.
The Heart Behind #MariChristmas ❤️
This initiative was born from an urgent and painful necessity: to provide a safe, warm, and familiar space during the holiday season. Sadly, many Trans women, lesbian women, and gay men who are rejected by their biological families, or who live far from them, often spend these dates alone. Loneliness and exclusion during Christmas are factors that, unfortunately, lead to a high rate of suicide or to community members being exposed to violent events that appear autolytic.
#MariChristmas exists to tell them: You are not alone! Here you have a home, a table, and a family that loves and celebrates you.
🌟 #MariChristmas: Resistance in Language
The origin of this word is an act of powerful reclamation created by Trans activist Diane Rodriguez.
- It is the union of two languages, Spanish and English.
- Mari: Comes from “maricón“, a stigmatizing insult in Latin America directed particularly at Trans women and gay men. By taking and using this word, the community transforms the insult into a term of pride, belonging, and power.
- Christmas: The well-known English word that evokes the festive season.
From this union, #MariChristmas stands as the vibrant replacement for Merry Christmas, celebrating life, identity, and resistance.
The #MariChristmas initiative began in the year 2010, coinciding with the legal creation of the Silueta X Association, marking its unbreakable commitment to the community from that moment forward.
