Silueta X Coordinates with Ombudsman’s Office on Three Key LGBTIQ+ Rights Priorities

Guayaquil, Ecuador – In observance of Pride Month, the Silueta X Association has reaffirmed its commitment to the defense of LGBTIQ+ rights by meeting with officials from the Ombudsman’s Office (Defensoría del Pueblo), including the Guayas Delegate Gonzalo Ortega. The high-level meeting focused on articulating three key actions reflecting the organization’s current legal and social priorities for building a more inclusive Ecuador.

1. Campaign for Assisted Reproduction Access

Following a historic legal victory in July 2024, where Silueta X won an Action for Non-Compliance in the Constitutional Court, the Association is pushing for the full implementation of the ruling.

Silueta X is coordinating with authorities to ensure that same-sex couples gain full access to assisted reproductive technologies (ART). This campaign aims to dismantle legal and structural barriers, guaranteeing equality in the fundamental right to form a family without discrimination.

2. Defense Against Civil Registry Violations

The report highlights ongoing systemic vulnerabilities faced by transgender individuals seeking to update their sex and/or gender markers on their identity cards through the Civil Registry.

Despite legal precedents, the Association accuses officials at the Civil Registry (@RegistroCivilec) of omissions and discriminatory practices that complicate the process. Silueta X is demanding concrete steps to ensure a fast, respectful, and dignified procedure, adhering to human rights standards and current legislation.

3. Vigilance in the ‘Case Rick’ Due Process

The case of Rick, a student at the Calicuchima school in Guayaquil, remains a symbol of the impunity faced by the community in educational settings.

Silueta X has requested that the Ombudsman’s Office implement “Vigilance over Due Process” in the case, citing the Ministry of Education’s (@Educacion_Ec) omission and slowness in ensuring justice and protection. The move seeks to prevent impunity and mandate effective anti-discrimination measures within the educational system.

A Call to Action for Pride Month

Silueta X emphasized that Pride Month is not just a celebration but a time for renewed action and solidarity.

“In this Pride Month, we renew our call to action and solidarity. At Silueta X, we not only celebrate our diversity, but we fight for a future where the rights of all people are respected,” the organization stated, thanking allies and reinforcing its commitment to an inclusive Ecuador.
